SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— Three peregrine falcon chicks hatched on the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge this year.
Officials say the raptors successfully raised the chicks in a nest box on the U.S. side of the bridge. No one knows if it’s the same pair of falcons that has nested on the span for years.
Nest boxes for the peregrines have been installed on the bridge since 2010, placed at locations that had evidence of past nesting activity. Last year, the resident pair of falcons hatched four chicks.
Over the years, the site has seen great success, hatching 45 falcon chicks since IBA staff started counting the birds.
