ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, MI— Another campground at Isle Royale National Park is closed following increased wolf activity due to improperly stored food.
The National Park Service says over the weekend, a wolf or wolves accessed the interior of a shelter at Duncan Narrows Campground by tearing, scratching, and pushing though the screen. They pulled items out of the shelter and chewed at an improperly stored cooler. No campers were in the shelter when the activity occurred.
Efforts earlier this month to deter wolf activity at the campground through a shorter closure and increased hazing were ineffective. To address the interest wolves have with human food and trash—and the continued non-compliance with food storage regulations in the campground—the park decided to close it for the rest of the month.
The move comes after Three Mile Campground was temporarily closed this month, also due to wolf habituation.
