LANSING, MI (AP)-- Gay rights advocates are eyeing a 2016 ballot drive to overturn Michigan's constitutional ban on gay marriage.
Recent polls show a majority of Michigan voters now support legalizing same-sex marriage. Statewide gay rights organization Equality Michigan hopes to raise $12 million for the ballot initiative.
Democrats in the state Senate are pushing lawmakers to put the gay marriage question on the 2014 ballot. But the odds of it passing in the Republican-led Legislature are slim.
Opponents of gay marriage vow to fight efforts to make it legal in 2016. The American Family Association of Michigan says polling is unreliable because some respondents don't want to run counter to a media "echo chamber" telling them that everyone favors gay marriage.
