LANSING, MI (AP)-- A Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report shows more children in Michigan had health insurance in 2012 than in 2008.
The share of uninsured kids fell to 4.5 percent in 2012 from 5.3 percent in 2008. Children from minority groups had the greatest gains in coverage.
The nationwide percentage of uninsured dropped to 7.5 percent from 9.7 percent in that period.
The report says more children are getting insurance through public programs such as Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program. Private coverage for children decreased to 61.1 percent in 2012 from 68.1 percent in 2008.
The study was conducted before the implementation of President Barack Obama's federal health care law. Researchers say the law will affect children's insurance and the report will be a baseline for measuring those changes.
