LANSING, MI (AP)-- Governor Rick Snyder is proposing a plan to boost Michigan's performance on recycling solid waste.
Michigan recycles only about 15 percent of its municipal waste, far below the national average rate of 35 percent. The Department of Environmental Quality says $435 million worth of paper, glass, plastics and other materials that could be recycled winds up in landfills each year.
The plan released Monday calls for doubling Michigan's rate within two years and providing convenient access to recycling in all 83 counties by 2017.
It would make no changes in the state's beverage container deposit law.
Instead, it calls for state and local partnerships to expand curbside service, educate the public and increase markets for recycled commodities.
