Marquette County trail gets signs to guide hikers

mymichigantrips.com

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has added interpretive panels along the Songbird Trail at Little Presque Isle Recreation Area in Marquette County.
A $750 donation from Skandia residents Lon and Lynn Emerick enabled DNR staffers to craft 18 signs that guide hikers along the Upper Peninsula trail. They describe wildlife that frequent the area and their habitat.
The panels replace numbered guide posts, which required the use of a printed trail guide.
The 1.1-mile-long trail begins near County Road 550 and ends at the mouth of Harlow Creek on the Lake Superior shoreline.
It's common to see a wide variety of birds there, from raptors to waterfowl to woodpeckers. The trail winds past pine forests, wetlands and aquatic habitat.
