Lack of cement in Michigan

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Officials say a cement shortage is delaying some construction projects in Michigan.

The Detroit Free Press reports last winter's Great Lakes freeze delayed the start of shipping in the springtime and other transportation issues have affected cement delivery.

Daniel DeGraaf, who heads the Michigan Concrete Association, says that if a homeowner wanted to get a driveway poured, for example, he or she might be told to wait a month or longer. He says companies have been trying to balance needs of different projects.

In the Detroit suburb of Huntington Woods, for example, a new school playground was delayed. Deliveries to other Great Lakes states have been affected.

Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Jeff Cranson says the cement shortage hasn't been having an effect on the agency's projects.
