LANSING, MI (AP)-- High school students could be awarded a special endorsement on their diploma if they earn enough credits in science, technology, engineering and math under bills advancing in the Michigan Legislature.
Supporters say having the STEM certification on diplomas and transcripts would help students receive training for in-demand jobs and improve their college resumes.
The legislation won unanimous approval in the Senate Thursday. It goes to the House, where similar legislation is pending.
Backers say if the bills are enacted, Michigan would be the first state to institute such a STEM certification opportunity.
The endorsement would be available to students who complete certain requirements while in seventh to 12th grade. Those include at six credits each in math and science, and a half-credit each in courses focusing on technology and engineering.
