Homeless veterans in U.P. to get housing help

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   The Upper Peninsula will receive more than $34,000 to help veterans with housing.

The money comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing—or HUD-VASH—program.  It combines rental assistance vouchers from HUD with case management and clinical services from the VA to help homeless vets find and keep permanent housing.

VA medical centers will be responsible for assessing homeless veterans and referring them for rental vouchers.

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority and Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain will receive the money.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
