LANSING, MI (AP)-- State officials are looking for individuals or groups to host educational sessions on aquatic invasive species at lakes around Michigan this summer.
Michigan's second annual Aquatic Invasive Species Landing Blitz is scheduled for June 26 through July 5. The Departments of Environmental Quality, Natural Resources, and Agriculture and Rural Development are taking part, along with local partners.
Sessions will be held at boat landings around the state.
Boaters will learn simple steps to prevent the spread of unwanted plants and animals such as Eurasian watermilfoil and zebra mussels.
Invasive species crowd out native species, disrupt lake ecosystems and interfere with boating, fishing and other recreation. Boaters can transfer invasive species and fish diseases to new waters by failing to clean vessels, trailers and other equipment.
