LANSING, MI (AP)-- The commander of Michigan's National Guard says additional security measures are being adopted after a fatal attack on two Tennessee military facilities, but he won't require that all
personnel be armed while on duty.
Major General Gregory Vadnais says Tuesday that military and civilian personnel with concealed-carry licenses have been authorized to have their own pistols at National Guard facilities since March.
He prefers the voluntary approach. Vadnais also says active-shooter drills are being ramped up and he's planning to "harden" recruiting facilities.
Republican state Rep. Gary Glenn of Midland says Gov. Rick Snyder should follow the lead of Republican governors in at least seven other states in recent days and order that Guard personnel be armed with guns while on duty.
