Workplace violations found at fish hatchery in Chippewa County

BRIMLEY, MI (AP)--   A federal agency is blowing the whistle on another, saying it found serious workplace violations at a fish hatchery in the Upper Peninsula.

The U.S. Labor Department on Monday said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service failed to follow guidelines for workers in confined spaces at the Brimley hatchery, near Sault Ste. Marie.

Inspectors say managers failed to evaluate tanks for confined space hazards, post warning signs and prevent unauthorized entry. It also found a ground plug missing on a wet vacuum and problems with exposed wires and cover plates.

Todd Turner, who oversees the hatchery, says many of the issues are "easy fixes." He says employees don't feel unsafe.

The hatchery raises lake trout. Federal agencies cited by the Labor Department don't face financial penalties.
