Legislative Conservationist of the Year goes to Kivela

Michigan House Democrats

BIG RAPIDS, MI--   State Representative John Kivela has been picked by the Michigan United Conservation Clubs as the Legislative Conservationist of the Year.

The Marquette Democrat is the primary sponsor of House Bill 5146, which significantly increases the penalties for importing the carcasses of deer from Chronic Wasting Disease positive states.  MUCC officials say as co-chair of the Michigan Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus, Kivela encourages awareness of and participation in hunting, fishing and conservation issues amongst his colleagues.  And they say he is a fair-minded legislator and willing partner on conservation issues.

Kivela received the honor at the MUCC's Conservation Awards Luncheon this past weekend in Big Rapids.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
