ST. IGNACE, MI (AP)-- Wearing shorts, cap and a blue pullover, Governor Rick Snyder has led thousands of people across the Mackinac Bridge, a Labor Day tradition that's imitated in other Michigan cities on a smaller scale.
The nearly 5-mile walk began as usual Monday on the Upper Peninsula side of the Mighty Mac. Buses took people to St. Ignace from Mackinaw City to start the walk.
Snyder was met by some protesters who want an oil pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac to be shut down.
Meanwhile, in Grand Ledge, near Lansing, residents participated in a walk around town and over the Bridge Street bridge. In Houghton, walkers with umbrellas took their own 5-mile walk in Copper Country.
