Marquette firefighters expand medical knowledge

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette City Fire Department has upgraded its medical license.

Fire Chief Ian Davis says the Paramedic/non-transport level will allow for immediate and aggressive treatment of critical patients.  Eight Marquette firefighters graduated from the UPHS paramedic program in June and achieved paramedic national registry certification.  Each put in more than 1,500 hours of classroom and clinical work.

Davis notes the last five firefighters hired are paramedic certified, and two are paramedic instructors.

The training was made possible by a local bequest that paid nearly $200,000 for paramedic training and equipment.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
