State money given to help lighthouses

MARQUETTE, MI--   Two Upper Peninsula lighthouses have been awarded state Preservation Grants.

The Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program grants can be used for rehabilitation projects or assessment for future improvements.

The Keweenaw Waterway Lighthouse Conservancy of Chassell has received $7,500. The group will hire a consultant to do a condition assessment report for the Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Light to guide future rehabilitation.

The DeTour Reef Light Preservation Society of Drummond Island has been given $60,000. The society will hire a contractor to address water infiltration issues by rehabilitating the pier deck, sidewalk lights, and casement windows.
