Ice cuts off UP island from mainland

NEEBISH ISLAND, MI (MPRN)--   It's been a long, tough, cold winter in Michigan, but you may feel you have nothing to complain about after hearing what residents of an island in the Eastern U.P. are going through right now.

Neebish Island is entering week two of being cut off from the mainland, after ice pieces from Lake Superior jammed the passage across the St. Marys River.

Jamie Pringle is captain of the island's ferry.  He says he is using an airboat to get mail and supplies to people, and the Coast Guard has a helicopter ready for emergencies.

“People are prepared for it that live here year round… generators… freezer full of food.”

About 60 people live on Neebish Island year-round.  That number swells to about 500 during the summer time.

Tracy Samilton covers the auto beat for Michigan Radio. She has worked for the station for 12 years, and started out as an intern before becoming a part-time and, later, a full-time reporter. Tracy's reports on the auto industry can frequently be heard on Morning Edition and All Things Considered, as well as on Michigan Radio. She considers her coverage of the landmark lawsuit against the University of Michigan for its use of affirmative action a highlight of her reporting career.
