Body of missing NMU student found

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Northern Michigan University student missing since Friday in Ishpeming Township has been found dead.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says Guiancarlo Estupigan, 25, went on a hike by County Road 510 near the Yellow Dog River Thursday afternoon. His roommate said he wanted to take photographs of the falls. When Estupigan didn’t return Friday afternoon the roommate went out to search and found his Subaru Crosstrek in the Yellow Dog parking lot.

Sheriff Greg Zyburt says Estupigan was found by volunteers Sunday around 4:15 p.m. 2,300 feet south of County Road 510 and the Yellow Dog River, about 300 feet from the roadway. It appears Estupigan became lost and disoriented in a snowstorm that hit the area Thursday afternoon.

No foul play is suspected. An autopsy will be performed by the Marquette County Medical Examiner.

Estupigan was a Northern sophomore majoring in Fish and Wildlife Management.

Assisting in the search were the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Police, an MSP helicopter, Marquette County Search and Rescue, Rescue 131, and Powell Township 161.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
