Submerged grenade found in Bessemer

BESSEMER, MI--   A section of Eli Avenue in Bessemer was blocked off Tuesday after authorities found an unexploded hand grenade.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the device found near Powdermill Creek around 2:25 p.m. Deputies responded and found what appeared to be an old hand grenade that had been submerged for some time.

The area was closed to traffic and the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad in Grayling was contacted for assistance. The squad rendered the grenade safe.

The Gogebic County Road Commission, Central Dispatch and Beacon Ambulance assisted in the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
