Man escapes Manistique house fire

MANISTIQUE, MI--   A Manistique home is considered a total loss following a fire Wednesday.

Around 1:20 p.m. Manistique Public Safety and Volunteer Fire Officers were called to 217 New Elm Street. They found heavy smoke billowing from the rear of the home. The occupant of the building, Todd LaLonde, 53, was visible from a window in the back of the house.

Firefighters entered the building and got LaLonde out. He was treated at the scene by Manistique EMS. No injuries are reported.

Officials say LaLonde was cooking on a portable propane stove. It got out of control and started a fire on the east side of the home.

The Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Office and Sault Tribal Police Department assisted at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
