PAULDING, MI--   It’s a sad end to a search for a missing Ontonagon County teen.

Sheriff’s officials say the body of 17-year-old Cam Besonen of Paulding was found Monday afternoon following a three-day search. Besonen—who was autistic and nonverbal—was found by teams that had been searching hundreds of acres in Haight Township.

Cam’s mother, Jill Keeley-Besonen, says he was last seen Friday around 5:45 p.m. at his home in Paulding. He was wearing a long-sleeve shirt and jeans, which offered little protection against sub-zero temperatures and snow over the past few days. His shoes were found about a mile from his house.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers, search and rescue personnel and volunteers joined in the search for Cam. Airplanes, Coast Guard helicopters, and drones responded to the region to do aerial searches, but fog and other inclement weather interfered. Michigan State Police and Ottawa National Forest personnel also  assisted in the effort.

On her Facebook page Jill Keeley-Besonen posted, “Thank you to all who participated in the search. He is with Jesus!”

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
