Few details yet available in NMU drowning

Nicole Walton

MARQUETTE, MI--   Flags at Northern Michigan University are at half-staff as the campus community mourns the death of a freshman soccer player.

Public Safety officials released a few more details about the drowning of Arianna Alioto, 18, of Columbus, Missouri Friday.

Director of Public Safety Mike Bath says the soccer team was working out late Friday afternoon in the PEIF lap pool.  The team left before 5 p.m., and a student who was working out in the area saw an unresponsive Alioto in the pool around 5:30.  Emergency personnel performed CPR and took Alioto to Marquette General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

NMU Athletic Director Forrest Karr says there was a lifeguard on duty.

“The lifeguard was a student—been on our staff working for us for a couple of years," he said.  "Actually, the head lifeguard and the lifeguard that trains other lifeguards."

The University is providing counselors for team members and coaches.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and it will take about a month for autopsy results.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery of Columbia, MO.  Visitation is Friday from 4-7 p.m., and a memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m.  Messages can be sent to the family at www.memorialfuneralhomeandcemetery.com

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
