Final police report released in NMU drowning

MARQUETTE, MI--   NMU Public Safety has completed its investigation into the drowning of a freshman soccer player in the University pool November 30.

Accidental drowning is cited as the cause of death for 18-year-old Arianna Alioto of Columbia, Missouri.

The police report says Alioto practiced with her teammates in the pool and was found unresponsive around 5:35 p.m.  Public Safety Director Mike Bath says it appears Alioto never left the pool and most likely drowned between 4:45 and 5 p.m.

An autopsy report confirms that there was no physical trauma to the body.  But it didn’t contain any other conclusive findings other than the drowning was accidental.  Bath says no one in the pool or sports complex workout areas saw anyone in distress during or at the end of practice.

He says the police report is now considered completed.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
