Houghton snowmobile accident injures one

LAIRD TOWNSHIP, MI--   An Illinois man has been injured in a Houghton County snowmobile crash.

Sheriff’s deputies say the accident happened Friday around 1:30 p.m. on Trail #12 in Laird Township.

They say Allen Ehlers, 53, was westbound when his snowmobile left the edge of the trail, a ski got caught up in powder, and he lost control.  He struck a group of trees and was thrown from the sled.

Bay Ambulance responded with its winter trail rescue unit after friends called 911.  Ehlers was taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital with a broken leg.

The Laird Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Deputies say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
