Lightning started fatal house fire, police say

LUCE COUNTY, MI--   Officials continue to investigate a house fire in Luce County that killed an elderly man.  

The blaze in Columbus Township is believed to have been started by a lightning strike during thunderstorms Wednesday night.  When firefighters arrived at the scene around 5:50 a.m. Thursday the house was engulfed in flames. 

Police say Forrest Rank, 79, was killed in the blaze.  He was the only person in the house at the time. 

No additional information has yet been released. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
