Police report drowning at Little Presque Isle

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Detroit man has drowned in Marquette Township.

State Police from the Negaunee Post were called Sunday around 3 p.m. to Little Presque Isle.  They found four teenaged adults had been swimming in Lake Superior on the northern side of Little Presque when one found himself in distress and unable to reach the island.  Others in the group tried to assist the victim but were unable because of rough water conditions.

Kenny Rubbet, 19, of Detroit was found by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team in 25 feet of water.  He was taken to Marquette General Hospital, but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Troopers were assisted by Marquette General EMS, the Marquette Township Fire Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
