Eastern U.P. mailman a hero to elderly woman

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   A mail carrier in the Chippewa County knew something wasn't right. Daniel Thorne always hands mail to a 95-year-old woman on his route, but she didn't respond to a knock at the door last week.

Thorne says he heard a plea for help: The Sault Ste. Marie woman had fallen and couldn't get up. She had been on her back for hours.

Thorne says he got the woman back on her feet. She had a bruise on her head. He stayed with the woman until relatives could arrive and accompany her to a hospital.

Thorne says she's home and "back to her old self."

Postal Service spokeswoman Sabrina Todd says Thorne has been nominated for special recognition by the postmaster general.
