MARQUETTE, MI-- Marquette Board of Light and Power officials have identified the cause of a power outage Saturday night in Marquette County.
WLUC-TV reports the Number 3 generator was damaged when a porcelain insulator failed at the Shiras power plant substation. When power being generated had no place to go it tripped the generator and shut it down. That in turn blew a steam tube.
The outage affected about 10,000 customers in half the City of Marquette and areas south to Skandia. Electricity wasn’t restored for nearly an hour.
BLP officials say they’ve been purchasing power off the grid since Sunday. Substation repairs were completed Monday morning.
