Kayaker rescued at Marquette park

MARQUETTE, MI--   A swamped kayaker needed assistance to get out of Lake Superior at Presque Isle Park over the weekend.

The Marquette City Fire Department was called Saturday around 4:15 p.m. to the western side of the Island and found the kayaker in the water about a quarter-mile from shore, being assisted by two other kayakers. The kayaker in distress was wearing a personal flotation device.

Three fire rescue swimmers were deployed into the water, made contact with the group, and were able to safely assist the distressed kayaker to shore.

A vessel from the Marquette Coast Guard Station retrieved the swamped kayak and provided standby until all were onshore.

The kayaker was checked out by medical personnel but was not taken to the hospital.

Marquette City Police and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
