Crash kills racer at Norway Speedway

Autoweek

NORWAY, MI--   A drag racer from Pennsylvania died in a crash at the Norway Speedway on Friday.

Autoweek says Doug Rose, 80, was driving his Green Mamba jet car around the track just after the national anthem, around 7:15 p.m. He lost control on the first turn and crashed into the guardrail. The car burst into flames.

Rose apparently suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash.

Friday’s races were canceled. They resumed on Saturday, and included a tribute to Rose.

He had been racing the Green Mamba since 1966.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
