Fatal crash in Luce County

LUCE COUNTY, MI— A Newberry woman has been killed in a traffic accident in Luce County.

Michigan State Police from the Sault Ste. Marie Post say it happened Thursday around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of M-28 and County Road 403.

Nancy Whalen, 75, of Newberry pulled out in front of a Charter Spectrum truck that was westbound on M-28. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was treated for minor injuries.

Troopers say alcohol, drugs, and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
