Child dies in Marinette County traffic accident

STEPHENSON, WI— A 5-year-old girl was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Marinette County last week.

Sheriff Randy Miller says it happened around 4 p.m. Thursday on County Highway X near Newton Lake Road in the town of Stephenson.

A vehicle driven by Kurtis Roskom, 48, of Crivitz was northbound on Newton Lake Road when he stopped at a stop sign. He proceeded into the intersection and struck an eastbound vehicle driven by 29-year-old Dylan Klempke of Crivitz.

The collision caused the Klempke vehicle to roll onto its side and partially eject an unrestrained child. 5-year-old Stella Klempke was pronounced dead at the scene.

Failure to yield from a stop sign and failure to use a child restraint system appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
