Vehicle drives off Houghton parking deck following mechanical failure

HOUGHTON, MI— A Houghton parking deck was damaged when a truck went through a guard rail Wednesday.

City Police say it happened around 1:40 p.m. on Portage Street. A pickup truck driven by a 29-year-old Houghton man was northbound when it had a mechanical failure. The vehicle continued to gain momentum as it crossed Montezuma Avenue and entered the parking deck. It struck and went over the guard rail, hit a corner of the U.P. Engineers and Architects building, came to rest on its roof on Portage near Shelden Avenue, and hit a parked but unoccupied vehicle.

The driver was taken to UPHS-Portage for treatment of his injuries and later released.

A damage assessment and repair plan are being prepared at this time through the City of Houghton. There appears to be minimal damage to the deck itself. The area will remain cordoned off until the investigation can be concluded and cleanup can be completed.

Assisting at the scene were the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, the Hancock Police Department, the Michigan State Police, and the Houghton Fire Department.
