Driver in critical condition after his truck crashes into St. Ignace car wash

ambulance and police lights

ST. IGNACE, MI— A St. Ignace man suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash in the city on Sunday.

Michigan State Police say it happened around 5:51 p.m. on US-2 near Boulevard Drive.

A Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 69-year-old St. Ignace man was trying to turn onto the highway from a gas station when it was struck on the driver’s side by a Toyota Highlander going west on US-2. The pickup left the road and crashed into a nearby car wash.

The driver’s foot became pinned on the accelerator, causing the engine to rev as white smoke filled the building. The Silverado eventually ignited. A volunteer firefighter used a pickup truck to pull the burning vehicle out of the car wash, and troopers used fire extinguishers to keep the flames from spreading to the passenger compartment.

The St. Ignace Fire Department eventually extinguished the fire, and crews used extrication tools to free the driver. He was taken to Mackinac Straits Health System with serious injuries.

The driver of the Highlander, a 43-year-old Akron, Ohio man, was not injured, but his three passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital.
