Three dead in Iron Mountain fire

Iron Mountain, MI – Three people are dead, following an apartment fire in Iron Mountain. Officials say the fire began around 4:30 a.m. Central time Friday. Firefighters arrived within minutes, and found a baby boy wrapped in a blanket at the bottom of the first floor stairs. Benjamin Balkum, 23, Kristy Savola, 19, and Angelica Tchokreff, 17, all of Iron Mountain, died in the blaze. Authorities believe Balkum may have brought the baby downstairs then returned for the women, but was overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning. Officials say an electrical fault in the living room has been determined to be the cause of the fire.
