Invasive plant may harm deciduous trees

By Carla E. Kinder

Undated – In Wisconsin news, scientists are gaining insight into the damage an invasive plant known as the garlic mustard may be doing to trees. The plant crowds out native wildflowers. Some plant experts say it can harm trees by releasing chemicals that damage fungi in the soil that trees need to thrive. Parks groups volunteers have been pulling the plants out but Purdue University weed scientist Steve Hallett says larger tracks of land may require help from a weevil that will chew the plant. He says more research is needed before the insect is released here.
