Crystal Falls, MI – Foresters with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources are harvesting infested wood in Iron County. The timber on 100 acres near Crystal Falls has been attacked by the Jack Pine Budworm, and was the site of a similar harvest last year. Officials logged 156 acres of timber in the same location, in an attempt to salvage the wood.
The Jack Pine Budworm affects large tracts of timber in the Great Lakes states and Canada. Stands greater than 50 years old are most heavily impacted by the outbreaks, which occur every ten to 15 years.
