Energy E-mail Scam

By Abbey Kwiatkowski

UN-DATED – Congressman Bart Stupak, cautioned his constituents about an e-mail scam. A widely circulated e-mail has been falsely claiming to be from the Department of Energy. The fraudulent e-mail attempts to entice people by claiming to offer a refund on energy bills. The piece of mail is designed to look legitimate and instructs those who receive it to click on a link that could infect the computer and also directs the person reading the e-mail to an online form asking for personal information that could be used for identity theft. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year.
