By Nicole Walton

Marquette, MI – A member of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe has been given prison time for domestic violence.

Leonard Nickaboine, 32, of Sault Ste. Marie pleaded guilty in March to a federal indictment charging him with Domestic Assault by an Habitual Offender. He was accused of throwing his wife to the ground in December, then hitting and choking her.

Nickaboine was convicted two previous times of domestic violence in Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Tribal Court.

Nickaboine was sentenced Friday to 41 months in federal prison and 3 years of supervised release.
