Stay on Citadel project

By Nicole Walton

Marquette, MI – Work on the Citadel project in Marquette won't proceed until at least next month.

Tuesday Judge Thomas Solka issued a stay on the six-story addition plan until a February 7 hearing, when the city will ask that the case be dismissed. Citadel neighbors Mary and Phillip Schneeberger have appealed the decision of the Board of Zoning Appeals to grant the city a construction permit.

The project includes four apartments, garages and storage space, and an open terrace. The Schneebergers say the proposed building would ruin the neighborhood's view of the rest of the city and Lake Superior. They're also worried it wouldn't fit in with surrounding historical structures.

The Citadel property is in the city's Central Business District, on the corner of Ridge and Blaker Streets.

City attorney Ron Keefe says he'll challenge the Schneebergers' legal standing at the February hearing. If the case isn't dismissed then, both sides will proceed with oral arguments on March 3.
