Buyer plans to tear former Smurfit mill down

By Associated Press

Ontonagon, MI – An official with a Canadian company that buys and sells scrap metal says it's purchasing the closed Smurfit-Stone Container mill in Ontonagon.

American Iron and Metal's President Herbert Black says the company made the deal over the weekend. He says the plant is expected to be demolished this year.

Officials with the Village of Ontonagon, however, have agreed to appeal to Chicago-based Smurfit not to sell to anyone who will tear the mill down.

The facility that made cardboard box parts ceased operations in 2009. Smurfit emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year.
