Skateboard parade being held to benefit Marquette Skate Plaza

By Nicole Walton

Marquette, MI – The City of Marquette hopes to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records this weekend through a skateboard parade.

The event is being held to raise funds for the city's planned skate plaza to be constructed on the corner of Fair Avenue and Pine Street.

Nheena Weyer Ittner is a member of the Marquette Area Skate Plaza Committee. She says the total cost of the project is around $300,000, but the committee has raised only about $35,000 so far.

Ittner says the plaza will enable skateboarders to use equipment specifically built for them, instead of using public stairways and railings.

Events take place Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Northern Michigan University. More than 250 skateboarders will have to participate to break the current record.
