Undated – Health officials say they're getting reports of mushroom hunters being hospitalized after eating poisonous morel look-alikes.
The Grand Traverse County Health Department reports ten people in the state have been hospitalized from eating the wrong mushrooms. That's up from zero hospitalizations reported in 2010 and five hospitalizations in 2009.
Michigan Poison Control officials say people are getting sick after eating mushrooms that look like morels but contain a toxin.
Morel hunting is a tradition in Michigan, where do-it-yourself pickers scour woods for the mushroom that has a short growing season.
