Artist in Focus: My Tree, "Where the Grace Is"

A conversation with the collaborative duo My Tree, about their album Where the Grace Is

Tension is defined by Merriam-Webster as "a feeling of nervousness that makes you unable to relax." And yet, it's something that we've all experienced, and for many, are still living with daily. For Caroline Davis and Ben Hoffmann (the two members of the collaborative group My Tree), the tensions of 2020 (and everything leading up to that momentous year) informed a creative project between them. That project unfolded into their next album, Where the Grace Is.

This album is both an examination and a meditation on tensions in our lives, and moments that sparked unrest and social justice reckonings. It reflects events such as the aftermath of the shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in 2016, and the killing of Ahmaud Arbery after a foot chase by three white men in a neighborhood in Georgia. By focusing the lens on systematic problems in our society, My Tree also reach into themselves to emote about where our society is at, and offers questions and solutions. Accompanying this commentary is self-produced music that both recognizes the subject matter, but also offers a balm of healing through emotive vocals and warm synths.
