Union files complaint against Besse facility closures in WI

MATTOON, WI— A carpenters’ union has filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Department of Justice after Besse Forest Products suddenly closed multiple facilities in the state last week.

One of them was the Goodman Veneer and Lumber Facility in Marinette County. A total of 48 workers there were terminated.

The North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters said Besse gave workers such short notice when it closed its Mattoon facility that employees had no time to plan for another job.

The Union says Besse violated Wisconsin’s Business Closing and Mass Layoff Law. It requires 60 days’ notice for closure or layoff at a facility where 25 or more employees are affected if the employer has more than 50 employees statewide.

More than 100 people are affected by the closures.
