Pretrial set for hit-and-run suspect

HOUGHTON, MI--   An Atlantic Mine man has been arraigned in Houghton County Circuit Court on hit-and-run charges. 

Benjamin Riutta, 31, allegedly hit a woman who was walking along Obenhoff Road in Adams Township March 10, then left the scene.  Riutta is charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident, resulting in serious impairment or death, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Riutta stood mute during his arraignment Monday, and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. 

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for May 18. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
