Man pleads guilty in Volp death

MARINETTE, WI--   The man accused of killing Iron Mountain resident Eric Volp in 2008 has pleaded guilty in the case.

Erik Smith, 33, pleaded Tuesday to hit and run involving death, hiding a corpse, and homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.  A charge of first-degree reckless homicide was dismissed.

Officials say Smith and Volp left an Iron Mountain bar October 10, 2008 and got into an argument in Smith’s vehicle.  When Volp got out of the car, police say Smith ran him over, put his body in the trunk, and dumped the body in a stream near Dunbar, Wisconsin.

Sentencing is set for August 14.

Smith is currently serving more than 19 years in a Colorado prison for possessing child pornography.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
