Suspect sentenced in Hancock church damage case

HANCOCK, MI--   A Hancock man has been sentenced for breaking into area churches and stealing money.  

Michael Cote, 20, was arrested for entering three churches in August, taking money and gift cards, and causing damage.  He was charged with two counts of breaking and entering with intent and one count of malicious destruction of a building.

Cote was sentenced Monday to nine months in jail with credit for 59 days already served and three years of probation.  He must also pay more than $9,000 in restitution.   

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
