St. Ignace man sentenced for teen's death

CHARLEVOIX, MI--   A St. Ignace man found guilty in the death of Brevort Township teen has been sentenced.

A Charlevoix County judge sentenced Darrell Lovegrove, 41, to ten to 15 years in prison with credit for 415 days already served.

Lovegrove was driving on the Mackinac Trail on October 3, 2015 when he crossed the centerline and hit a vehicle driven by Mitchell Snyder, 17, head-on.  Snyder was returning home from his school’s homecoming dance when the crash happened.  He died of his injuries.

A jury found Lovegrove guilty of involuntary manslaughter last month.  Prosecutors hoped a conviction on second-degree murder.

The case was moved to Charlevoix County because the Mackinac County prosecutor defended Lovegrove in a 1998 drunk driving case, and Lovegrove’s defense was affiliated with a business the Mackinac County judge’s wife owns.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
