Gogebic County woman sentenced to prison for child abuse

BESSEMER, MI--   A Bessemer woman has been sentenced on a charge of 2nd-degree child abuse.

Kayla Brown, 27, was accused of locking her 7-year-old son in a dog crate as punishment. Monday she was sentenced to 36 months in prison with credit for 53 days already served. She’s not allowed to have any contact with her child.

Officials say Brown and the boy lived with Matthew LaPlant, 31, in his Bessemer residence when the abuse took place.

A jury in August convicted LaPlant on two counts of 2nd-degree child abuse and one count of unlawful imprisonment.  He was given six to 30 years on the imprisonment charge and six to 20 years for each of the child abuse charges.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
